What an Enrolled Agent can do that others can't
An Enrolled Agent (EA) is licensed directly by the IRS, the only credential the agency itself grants. EAs have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers on any matter, at any IRS office, without the limitations placed on some other preparers. If the IRS is contacting you, this is the credential you want on your side.
Protect yourself from IRS scams
Unexpected tax messages can be stressful. The IRS normally contacts taxpayers first by mail, but legitimate calls and visits can also occur, so verify unexpected contact before sharing information or making a payment.
Watch for these warning signs
- Unusual payment demands: a caller insists you pay immediately using gift cards or prepaid debit cards.
- Threats and pressure: someone threatens immediate arrest or deportation to force you to pay.
- Suspicious messages: an unexpected message asks for sensitive information or directs you to unfamiliar links or attachments.
If something seems suspicious, avoid clicking links or sharing personal information. Go directly to the IRS website to verify how the IRS contacts taxpayers or find official fraud-reporting options.
